In a major boost for public transportation in Nigeria, the Public Transport Owners of Nigeria, PTONA, has declared an end to years of inactivity and unveiled a New roadmap to make transport safer, more affordable, and more reliable for everyday Nigerians.

Speaking at the PTONA AGM 2026, Acting President, Comrade Uwemedimo Udo Essen, said the association would reposition itself to serve not just transport owners, but the millions of commuters who depend on road transport daily.“Today marks the end of invisibility.

Today PTONA steps back into the light – stronger, united, and ready to serve,” Essen declared. To achieve this, he announced the creation of a Legal Unit to challenge illegal road levies, harassment and intimidation that often drive up transport fares. PTONA will also deploy State Coordinators across the 36 states and FCT to ensure that problems from parks and motor terminals reach national leadership.

On sustainability, Essen said PTONA will pursue member-owned funding and partner with government agencies and private bodies to deliver training, modern fleet financing, insurance, and skills development for drivers and conductors.“When public transportation works, the economy moves and families get to their destinations with dignity,” he added
