The Minister of Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has urged prospective commercial motorcycle, tricycle and quadricycle riders to undergo approved training, obtain the required licences and use appropriate protective gear before beginning operations.

Speaking at the launch of the “Safe Journey” 2026 Road Safety Campaign in Accra, the Minister stressed that riding experience alone does not qualify anyone to operate commercially.He encouraged riders to take advantage of DVLA-approved training programmes, obey traffic regulations and respect other road users as the Government prepares for the final rollout of regulated commercial motorcycle, tricycle and quadricycle operations.

Hon. Nikpe also announced the ongoing deployment of Traffitech-GH, a technology-based enforcement system that will use cameras to detect traffic violations and notify offenders.

The Director-General of the NRSA, Abraham Amaliba, Esq., said road safety must remain central to the expansion of motorcycle and tricycle services. He cautioned riders against speeding, reckless overtaking, ignoring traffic signals, riding under the influence and operating without protective gear.

The Somoco Ghana Riding Academy also outlined its training and certification programme, which will connect qualified riders to employment and motorcycle ownership opportunities through its Work and Pay scheme.

The “Safe Journey” 2026 Road Safety Campaign, organised in collaboration with Somoco Ghana Limited, is bringing key institutions and rider associations together to promote safer, more responsible commercial riding.

The campaign is supported by the Ministry of Transport, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Ghana Police Service, and various rider associations.Together, we are working to make every journey safer.
